If you’re like me and you hit snooze 5 times before you actually get up, leaving you 30 minutes to get ready, this one’s for you.
I keep everything pretty simple and NOT because I’m the queen of waking up late, but because I don’t think you need a 15 step morning skin care routine to keep your face looking fresh! My caveat here is that my night time routine is a call to arms with BHAs, HAs and Ceramides, but that’s for another day. For now, take a scroll and check out the products I know are my go to’s even when I’m half asleep.
Here’s the thing about a morning cleanser… it’s not always necessary. *gasp*
But if you really feel like you need to wash your face first thing in the am, no one is stopping you. There are some mornings where I wake up, feel grimy, and cleanse my face, but it’s not a part of my every day routine. I do recommend using something very gentle and moisturizing. Your skin goes through a lot during the day and treating it kindly from the get-go will do wonders for your complexion.
I suggest COSRX Good Morning Cleanser. It’s only $12 (you’re welcome) and it’s everything you would want/need in an am cleanser. I mean, hello, it even says good morning on the bottle.
NOW, when you read that you didn’t have to wash your face and got really excited? There is at least one thing you should do. Turn your sink to lukewarm and gently splash your skin a couple of times. This will wake you up and open your pores for all the good stuff you’re about to put on your face.
Caudalie kindly sent me their Vinosource essence and tbh it’s my favorite of the bunch. It goes on so smooth and I swear my skin is visibly plumper. I apply using a cotton pad (use the Shinseido ones because they are literally threaded with silk, making applying a cotton pad to your face just that much more enjoyable). This step may not be necessary for everyone but it helps with my dry skin.
I thought everyone used serums, but after talking to my some of my close friends I realized that they didn’t even know what serums were?! So, if you’re reading this you know now: USE A SERUM. Seriously though. Serums carry large amounts of active ingredients that are going to help your skin throughout the day. You want it to be the first product you put on your face (after essence) and you’ll want your skin to soak up all the serum goodness before it gets weighed down with any moisturizer, makeup, etc. There are so many different kinds that you’ll need to do a little research to see what’s best for your unique skin type. I’m on my second bottle of Caudalie Vinoperfect Serum and this little guy is packed full of lovely ingredients that help bring radiance and moisture back to my face. It’s also done so much to improve my acne scars – I very much recommend!
GIVE ME ALL THE MIST! I keep one on my vanity, in my purse, in my car, even in my refrigerator. I have yet to find one I didn’t like (formula wise), but it’s important to test them out. Some release a fine, almost invisible mist (my fave kind), but some release a heavy mist that makes you feel like you just got out of the shower and you don’t want that. When in doubt, just make sure you don’t see water droplets forming on your face when you spray (that mean’s it’s too harsh!). I am currently loving this Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist. The bottle is spectacular and it won’t leave your face feeling like you were just hit with a water hose.
My skin is like the Sahara Desert so sometimes I need an Aquaphor type product to keep my skin from peeling throughout the day (trust me it sucks).
On my okay face days, I use Keihl’s Ultra Facial Cream. This one contains really good ingredients like Imperata Cyclindrica which is from a desert plant and helps the skin retain water kind of like desert plants do. It also contains Squalane which works to restore the skins natural moisture barrier.
Okay, okay, so this isn’t in the cover photo because I completely forgot about it but that doesn’t mean you should exclude it from your am skin care routine.
Try to find one over 30 spf because the 15 spf is bullshit and honestly doesn’t do anything. I don’t feel like I need to cover spf in depth because I’m sure you can hear the mom voice in your head basically yelling at you to put in on before you step into the sunshine.
This routine, though it seems like a lot, takes me less than 10 minutes, so take your 10 minutes and prep your skin for the day! Links to my current favorite products are provided but it may take some trial and error to find what works best for your skin. Sephora gives out free samples in store, so talk with your fave Sephora specialist and try some goodies out to see what you like.
Oh! And here are some key ingredients to stay away from:
- Anything with fragrance should be kept far from the face
- Propylene glycol
- Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) / Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES)
- Synthetic colors
